How to Get Festive With Your Household Bubble

As we head into colder weather, we all have to do our part to stay safe this year, which means planning ways to have fun within our household bubble. Whether or not living in a lockdown zone, this holiday season will look a little different for all of us. With parties cancelled and markets closed, you might be wondering how to get in the holiday spirit. Rest assured, there are plenty of ways to celebrate the season from your home and keep things festive this December!

Get Festive at Home
There are many ways to celebrate the seasonal spirit without leaving your home. This weekend, put on your favourite holiday playlist, warm up the mulled wine and eggnog, and line up the gingerbread houses for a friendly family competition. Cap off the night with your favourite holiday movie and you are guaranteed to be filled with festive cheer!

DIY Activity Night
One of the best ways to bring some fun into your home is by having a weekly activity night. To keep it interesting, every week one person in the house can plan a new activity. With so many options, you’ll never run out of ideas. Here are some of our favourites:

  • Pick up an art kit and learn to paint

  • Organize a quiz night

  • Support a ceramics store and decorate mugs

  • Plan your own wine tasting

  • Make your own candles

  • Board Games and puzzles are always a classic

Bonus points if you can coordinate your activities with another household over zoom!

Themed Dinners
One of the easiest ways to liven up your evening is by planning a themed dinner. If you’re a foodie who misses trying new things, consider testing out cuisines from different nationalities, curating a menu based on traditional recipes and drinks! If you’re not much of a chef, but you miss a good old fashioned party, throw a dress-up themed dinner for your house with less emphasis on the food and more emphasis on the costumes.

Get Outdoors
With so many families working from home, it can be close quarters. One of the best ways to get your space is by getting outdoors. Enjoy the beautiful Canadian winter and go for a bundled-up nature walk. Whether it’s in a ravine or just a walk around the block, stretch your legs and appreciate the nature around you.

Plan a Stay-cation

If you had to cancel your vacation in Mexico this winter, you should still treat yourself to a well deserved break! Organize a stay-cation from your home and carve out the time to unwind and disconnect. The key is picking the days and planning for it just like a regular vacation. Pamper yourself with a spa day at home and order in from your favourite restaurant. Since you’ll be saving on the airfare and hotels, find ways to treat yourself from the comfort of your home.

Great Canadian Bake-off
Nothing gets you ready for the holidays like a warm baked good. This year with so much time at home, try a complex recipe you normally wouldn’t make! It’s a great way to satisfy your sweet tooth and get the whole family involved.

We might not be able to go out and celebrate the festive season the way we normally would, but we hope these tips can help you get in the holiday spirit from home. While you’re finding ways to stay busy in lockdown, you might just invent a new family tradition.
