Deciding whether or not you should take a new job can be difficult. Here are five considerations that you should think about when making your decision.
Deciding whether or not you should take a new job can be difficult. Here are five considerations that you should think about when making your decision.
Salary
One of the first considerations of taking a new job is what kind of salary you’re being offered. As a qualified professional you want to ensure that you’re getting paid for what you’re worth. If you’re unsure of what kind of salary you should expect you can research on websites like Glassdoor; it will show you information on the average salary for that position in your geographical area.
As well, always ask yourself if the salary offered is a jumping-off point. Salaries can often be negotiated and a few thousand dollars extra or added benefits are well worth the negotiation, especially over time.
Benefits
Company benefits can save you thousands of dollars over the course of your career. They may not be the defining factor that influences your decision, but they can definitely help sway you either way. If you’re a new parent or plan to be, offered benefits for parental leave could be significant to you. Benefits for health and dental insurance could also save you thousands of dollars, and even be invaluable if something was to happen to you while you were covered under their plan.
Quality of Life
Although you may receive a raise, do you have a longer commute or longer work hours that limit you from spending time with friends and family? Balancing your job and your personal life is important and if this new job causes your personal life to significantly suffer, is it worth it?
Work Environment
A burgeoning concern for many people, especially Millennials, is company culture. Finding a work environment that suits you can considerably contribute to your happiness and efficiency at that job. Everybody has different likes and dislikes, so it’s important to ask yourself what kind of environment you prefer. You may be motivated by formal office environments that are highly structured, or you could prefer more casual surroundings. Knowing what’s best for you can help you decide on that new job.
Your Future
When envisioning your future it’s helpful to visualize both where you see yourself in 10 years, and where you want to see yourself in two years. When offered a new job you should ask yourself if it is this is a step in the right direction for you and the goals you want achieve. Is there room for growth and promotion from the position they’re offering you? Just because it’s new, doesn’t mean it’s better, and what’s important is to think about what kind of future you see for yourself with this new job.
