Vice-President, Portfolio Manager
"It's not just about the money... It's about getting the living right."
There are defining moments
in everyone's lives. This was one of mine:
27 years ago, I was sitting on a sunny outdoor patio in downtown Toronto with a girlfriend pontificating about life. As a young professional with the Chartered Accountant designation and 10 years of finance and investing experience, I was struggling to find my way in the bearish commercial real estate market. My friend encouraged me to think about the aspects of my career I enjoyed the most, and given the experience I had gained so far, what strengths and values I might bring to the table. And, what is it that will make my life the most fulfilling, productive, and fun. Tough questions! That winter, I surprised everyone and travelled to Whistler by myself to learn how to ski. While I knew no one initially, I turned that two week holiday into a year of discovering the beauty of the West Coast, an ability to ski just about anywhere on the mountain, and most importantly a career that made perfect sense to me. I never went back to live in Toronto. Instead, I stayed and built a business helping people with their money and investments.
Fast forward almost 25 years and I feel truly blessed that I made the decision to become a portfolio manager and build an investment and wealth management business
in Vancouver. I combine my love of engaging with people and their lives, a profound interest in the complex world of investments, my unique skill set and naturally warm, empathetic nature for a fantastic group of select client families.
When you stop and think about what has happened globally in the past 30 years - bull, bear and sideways markets, Asian crisis, tech wreck, 9/11, credit crisis, etc. - it has been a very challenging, yet intellectually stimulating time. It is that breadth of experience and perspective that has fed and nurtured the development of my sound, intellectual framework for making portfolio investment decisions and helping navigate clients toward their life cycle goals.
The Vancouver and BC community has been very good to me. I have had the distinct pleasure of serving as Board Chair of the United Way of the Lower Mainland, lead major fundraising activities for the benefit of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and played a key strategic role for a friend by fundraising for the internationally acclaimed Aga Khan University. Most recently, I became one of the original activators of SheEO, a group looking to alter the funding landscape for female entrepreneurs. I have run many 10K races, cycled the Gran Fondo in Penticton, and hiked mountains for many causes near and dear to me. I have yet to discover a yoga marathon for charity - perhaps I'll start one. I am truly lucky to know what it means to give back.
Of course my personal statement is not complete without mentioning that I have been married to a psychologist in a private practice for 21 years, and have a fabulous 17 year old daughter. Together we enjoy skiing, cycling, hiking, sailing the Pacific Northwest, travelling the world, good food, and spending quality time with friends and family on the Sunshine Coast.
