Erik Dekker, BBA (Econ), CIM

Senior Investment Advisor, Senior Portfolio Manager

Erik Dekker co-founded Dekker Hewett Labelle Wealth Advisory with Mark Hewett and has more than 25 years of experience in the investment industry.

Erik’s commitment to a career in finance began early in life. Growing up, his single mom was busy taking care of the family and holding down a job. With little time to look after her finances, she entrusted them to an advisor who slowly managed to lose every penny. To learn a better way to look after someone’s wealth, he earned his Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) from Simon Fraser University with focus in Finance and Economics and joined Canaccord Capital in 1996.

Today, Erik has been recognized multiple times for his knowledge of investing, wealth planning and client-focused, goals-based wealth stewardship. In an increasingly dynamic environment, Erik simplifies wealth for his clients while forging industry relationships that bring them exclusive capital markets opportunities. Erik has completed the Canadian Investment Manager (CIM®) designation and also carries the Portfolio Manager designation.

Erik is an active contributor to the community. He has served on the board of The North Shore Hospice & Palliative Project since 2014 and supports Engineers In Action (EIA), which bridges the gap between poverty and resources. He helped raise $200K through the Chief Ernie Campbell Memorial Golf Tournament for the children of Musqueam Nation. Erik also supports Beer by the Pier, an annual event that raises critical funds to support the most vulnerable children and youth of the North Shore community.

Mark Hewett, PEng, FCSI

Senior Investment Advisor, Senior Portfolio Manager

Mark Hewett co-founded Dekker Hewett Labelle Wealth Advisory with Erik Dekker and has more than 25 years of experience in the investment industry. He received his Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering from UBC in 1993 and his PEng in 1997 and, after graduating, held key roles in leading mining, energy and engineering consulting firms.

At the financial services institution where his wife worked, Mark witnessed a lack of proper planning being done for clients. This sparked his interest in pursuing a career to deliver a higher standard of wealth stewardship. The rigorous planning discipline, analysis and collaboration he developed as an engineer has translated well to an advisory career. In addition to helping our clients preserve wealth, mitigate taxes, plan their estates, and support charities strategically, Mark engineered the creation of our team’s processes. He also collaborates closely with Erik and Shawn to manage our portfolios.

Mark is a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute (FCSI®) – the highest designation within the Canadian investment industry. He also carries the Portfolio Manager (PM) and the Chartered Investment Manager (CIM®) designations and a Certificate in Retirement Strategy from the Canadian Securities Institute.

Mark actively supports the community. He has volunteered as a Youth Soccer Coach with the North Vancouver Football Club (NVFC) since 2006; volunteers with the North Shore Mountain Biking Association (NSMBA), which supports “trails for all, trails forever”. Mark formerly served on the board of the REALnorth Opportunities Fund for eight years. Along with his wife, Colleen, Mark enjoys hiking, backpacking, cycling, skiing and other outdoor sports. His favourite destination is the family cabin at Bridge Lake in BC’s Cariboo region.

Shawn Labelle, CFA

Senior Investment Advisor, Portfolio Manager

A Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) charter holder, Shawn Labelle brings our clients rigorous analytical ability, sophisticated options and trading skills, and vigilant market monitoring to keep our finger on the pulse daily. Shawn helps our most affluent clients to generate tax-efficient income and diversification from their concentrated positions using advanced options trading strategies such as covered call writing. He also promotes our active discretionary portfolio management with a commitment to always put clients’ interest first.

Shawn completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree in Finance from the University of Toronto, where he graduated with honours and participated in the Undergraduate Commerce Society and volunteered for Habitat For Humanity and the Red Cross.

Shawn joined our team in 2011 after working as Associate Retail Products, where he gathered a strong grounding in trade execution and backoffice best practices. He hosted the daily morning call for Investment Advisors, contributed to the daily market research publication, provided research support, and generated investment ideas for advisors. Shawn also served as liaison between institutional asset managers and internal Portfolio Managers and traded to achieve the best prices for equity, fixed income and mutual fund orders, among other roles. Erik and Mark recruited him to join our team after being impressed with his strong track record on the market research desk over the years.

When he’s not in the office, you will find Shawn living an active lifestyle in the great outdoors with his wife and young son – hiking, backpacking and cycling. He also enjoys playing hockey and baseball. Shawn has visited over 55 countries and his life goal is to add a new country every year.
