Age Matters

  • Year of Birth – Canadians born after 1991, the since inception cumulative lifetime contribution room does not apply
  • Personal Limit – Your TFSA contribution room begins to accumulate on January 1 the year you turn age 18
  • Residency Requirement – Your limit is impacted if you are considered a non-resident for tax purpose
  • Unintentional Contribution – Relying on the since inception cumulative lifetime number could lead to overcontribution
  • Penalty for Overcontribution – CRA charges a 1% penalty for each month of excess TFSA contribution
