Why I Became an Investment Advisor: Chris' Story
MSB Wealth - Jun 25, 2025
My path to becoming an Investment Advisor wasn't on my radar until my own experience, a friend's encouragement and the freedom to build something meaningful led me to it.
I became an investment advisor when a friend of mine, who had been an investment advisor for many years, told me that it was time for me to get out of the corporate banking and move into managing personal wealth. He told me that I was personable, friendly and could communicate well and that these would all be assets if I decided to become an investment advisor. He told me to approach the banks as they would train me and help me launch my career. Previously, I had worked for 10 years as a corporate deposit broker which meant I sold companies GIC's and savings accounts. I was always frustrated because I felt was unable to sell what I thought was the best product, I was only able to sell from a very narrow and specific list of investments. When I became an investment advisor, all that changed, I was now able to provide my clients with what I believed to be the best investment option from an endless array of investment opportunities.
I work with families and the decisions that they make, based upon my advice, can have a profound impact, on their lives and the lives of their children for many years to come. This is a tremendous responsibility, and it is an honour when people take my advice. And so, I work very hard to ensure that the advice I'm giving them is true and accurate and meaningful.
As an advisor to my clients, I am required to be informed and aware of geopolitics, history, economics, scientific and medical breakthroughs, and technological advances. I am required to have a broad and informed worldview. I believe this gives me deeper insights into how the world really works. I'm required to use critical thinking every day. To come up with my own convictions regarding what I believe is happening, and what impact this will have over time.
