Minuk's Musings and the Oscars

Richard Minuk - Mar 08, 2024

The Academy Awards are this Sunday and are hosted again by Jimmy Kimmel.

As usual, gold will be on the minds of the nominees as Oscar winners receive 24 oz. gold-plated statuettes.

Gold is an investable asset class and since last year’s awards, prices for the yellow metal have rallied to over US $2,100 per oz, a gain of 18% (i).

Some speculate that higher inflation vs historical averages and geopolitical concerns are the reason for the current higher levels.

Even Costco has taken notice of the increased demand for gold. Costco has begun selling USD 2,000 gold bars to their customers in stores and online. According to CNN, Costco sold more that $100 million worth of the bars last quarter.

As for who will walk away with the awards, my colleague, Brad Goldhar, is a huge movie buff and his predictions on winners are often golden.

Best PictureOppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan. Not my favourite of his films, check out Inception if you have not seen it yet. Two foreign language films worth checking out are Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest, the latter the favourite to win the Oscar for Best International Picture

Best DirectorChristopher Nolan, last nominated in this category for Dunkirk

Best Actor - Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer, this is his fifth Christopher Nolan film, previously in two Batman movies, Inception and Dunkirk

Best ActressLily Gladstone for Flowers of the Killer Moon, she will be the first Indigenous actor to win this award

Best Supporting ActorRobert Downey Jr., continuing the dominance of the cast and crew of Oppenheimer at this year’s ceremony

Best Supporting ActressDa’ Vine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers, a sweet movie highly recommended, directed by Alexander Payne – remember Sideways also starring Paul Giamatti?

Have a great weekend and enjoy the show,
