I will construct a portfolio that maximizes your long-term income and growth potential while respecting your precise risk tolerance.

Industry-leading research from BMO Capital Markets provides coverage of global markets and helps me construct efficient portfolios.

Following Warren Buffett’s long-term, buy-and-hold style of equity investing, I:

  • Invest in strong businesses with fundamentals that meet discerning criteria and hold them for long-term appreciation,
  • Invest in companies I know and understand,
  • Don’t give up after one bad year; a lower cash flow doesn’t necessarily mean we must sell,
  • Expect to have some good years, some bad years and some really good years over a long time horizon,
  • Aim to protect you from risky products, unwise ideas, and your own emotions (if you want to beat the market with the latest hot stock tips, I am not the right fit for you), and
  • Aim for time in the market rather than timing the market.

My fundamental investing approach

Believing that the most important metric is whether a potential investment meets strict criteria, I take a bottom-up, fundamental investing approach that seeks strong, healthy, blue-chip companies with:

  • An effective management team,
  • Good financial ratios (liquidity/operational efficiency/profitability/price to earnings),
  • High industry standing and market position,
  • An attractive valuation,
  • Great dividends, preferably growing,
  • Solid growth prospects,
  • Expected long-term future profitability,
  • And other attributes.

A fundamental approach can provide a more reliable and long-term investment strategy, as it is based on the underlying health and potential of a company rather than short-term market fluctuations. Also, it helps me to identify undervalued companies that may have significant growth potential, allowing us to buy at a lower price and potentially earn higher returns over time.

Once I have decided what to buy, I look at macro-economic, technical data and proactively adjust your portfolio for today’s markets, always striving to anticipate trends.

Managing world-class managers

While I am skilled at selecting Canadian small-cap equities, today there are so many equities and so much data to crunch through, I cannot be skilled at analyzing everything. For every kind of stock you want to own, there is a Portfolio Manager who specializes in that particular industry and sector. My primary role is to match your goals and tolerance with some of the best money managers in the world to help you achieve your vision of success. I manage a pool of proven, institutional-quality fund managers, vetting them along with the bank analysts.

The BMO Private Wealth Architect Program

Most of my clients work with me through the BMO Private Wealth Architect Program. Architect brings you access to institutional-calibre investment managers, enhanced diversification and active portfolio oversight. Your portfolio is rebalanced quarterly to maintain your objectives and year-end tax loss harvesting minimizes tax reporting.

This account allows me to combine various managers with different specializations and to use mutual funds for some categories that are not large enough in the portfolio to warrant using individual stocks or bonds. Mutual funds are held in the same account as your managed stocks or bonds, according to your unique parameters. Finally, this account even allows me to use low-cost exchange traded funds (ETFs) to build broad diversification at a very low cost.

  • Architect gives me the flexibility to invest in separately managed portfolios, mutual funds, exchange traded funds, alternative investments and other eligible managed and non-managed investment vehicles – all within one solution.
  • You pay one fee and receive one set of documents and a comprehensive statement.
  • Your customized Investment Policy Statement outlines your needs, goals, parameters, and risk tolerance.
  • I lay the foundation of your asset mix strategy.
  • I construct your custom portfolio composed of specialized managers’ funds and other investment vehicles.
  • You benefit from active monitoring and maintenance from a team of experienced professionals.
  • I monitor the non-managed portion while the managed portion receives daily attention from the overlay portfolio manager, putting the Architect Program in a class of its own.
  • I actively coordinate the underlying investment vehicles in the managed portion of the portfolio for systematic rebalancing, intelligent cash management and effective tax management.
