Get to know the MMB Wealth team - Chris Burns

How long have you worked with MMB Wealth?
Having Joined BMO Nesbitt Burns in January of 2012, I was invited to join the Keene McManus McIntosh in 2017. When Ali retired in 2019, Andrew and Drew offered me the role of partner. I was enormously pleased that they did so, of all the teams in the Westmount branch, I felt that the way they managed money was the method that most aligned with my own approach. It allowed for a our books to be combined in a very smooth and seamless manner.

Where were you born and raised?
I was born and raised in Calgary the youngest of five children. I  feel very fortunate that all my siblings chose to stay in Calgary and raise their families so that we’re able to be involved in one another’s lives and see my nephews and nieces grow up. 

What are you passionate about?
Janet and I own a cabin on an acreage in the foothills west of Cochrane that has been in my family for three generations. It is a wonderful place to read, cook, play with our daughter and entertain friends. The property requires a great deal of maintenance which I enjoy because it gets me out in nature, often with a chainsaw (nature can often be a bit unruly).  

How would you spend an entire day in Calgary?
Typically, I would start by taking my family to Red’s Diner Inglewood for breakfast, then perhaps we would swing by the Calgary Zoo, my daughter loves the tigers, then home for a nap. Afterwards I would leave our daughter with a babysitter and take my wife out to dinner with friends, maybe to The Nash or somewhere new we haven’t tried before. 

Where is your favourite place to travel?
I love the Mayan Rivera as an easy go to, but I travelled extensively in my youth and I would say that my most vivid memories travelling are from the time I spent in Vietnam and Cambodia I also have wonderful memories of several diving vacations I took in the Philippines when I was a teacher in South Korea.

What is your favourite sport?
My brother and I have had season’s tickets to the Calgary Flames and the Calgary Stampeders for many years now. The best part about the football games is that we attend with several other families who each take turns hosting a tailgate party before each game. On warm summer’s nights, its wonderful to meet up with friends that you’ve know for years and have a barbecue before going into the stadium and watching the Stamps beat the hell out of someone. First class entertainment.

What is your favourite food?
Don’t have one. I love all types of food and cuisines from around the world and I’m always willing and excited to try new things. What I’m really looking forward to is introducing my daughter to different types of food, helping her to build a palate that appreciates a wide array of flavours and textures. My father did that and it had a huge impact on my love of food. I also like to cook so I’m hoping that together, my daughter and I can discover different dishes that she loves and we can work together to recreate them at home.

How do you spend your free time?
I’ve mentioned the cabin, I like to read and cook, I like to golf, watch movies and play the occasional video game. Mostly, I spend my time as a father, its become my new hobby.
