A Practical Conversation About Staying Safe

Fraud and cybercrime are becoming more sophisticated, especially online, and Canadians are increasingly being targeted through phone calls, emails, text messages, and social media. This session is designed to help you better understand today’s fraud landscape and feel more confident navigating it.

Seminar Objectives:

Led by Community Support Member, Samantha Adams, this CAFC anti‑fraud presentation will cover:

• Common scams, including grandparent (emergency) scams, investment and romance scams, and phishing attempts
• Digital‑age threats such as AI‑driven scams, cryptocurrency fraud, and social media deception
• Practical cyber‑security tips, including how to verify unsolicited requests, protect personal information, and avoid high‑pressure tactics
• How and where to report suspected fraud, including guidance on contacting the Canadian Anti‑Fraud Centre and local police

This presentation focuses on real‑world examples and straightforward guidance you can use right away. You’ll learn how to recognize warning signs, understand how scams work, and know what steps to take if something doesn’t feel right—all with the goal of helping you protect yourself and prevent financial loss.

Prior to the game, we will gather in the Michigan/Superior community room for pizza and refreshments. Historically, this event has been very popular and the response has exceeded capacity. This year we’ve secured increased capacity in an effort to accommodate more of you, but we may need to implement a lottery system to select attendees.
