'Atop Mount Kilauea, Hawaii. This crater is 2 x 2-1/2 miles and is 2100 degrees F and higher inside. We could feel the steam coming out of steam vents, but couldn't see the lava, as it is flowing underground. You can see the edge of the crater behind us.'
13-yr-old Daniel's Wish Comes True
August 21, 2007
Dear (Make-a-Wish) and Boris:
On behalf of Daniel and the rest of the family I want to extend a huge thank-you to Make-A-Wish Foundation and to you both for making Daniel’s wish come true. Hawai’i and the cruise were everything he had imagined and so much more, and we all enjoyed a vacation we’ll never forget.
It’s hard to pin down Daniel’s highlight of the trip. He was overwhelmed by the beauty atop Mount Haleakala, where he said to me, "I’m not sure we’re on earth anymore. It looks like we’re in heaven.” He was just as excited about the nightly live shows at the ship’s theatre - which included an illusionist on two of the nights - as well as being entertained by the waiters in the ship’s restaurants, one of whom taught him how to use chopsticks and another who wowed him with card tricks.
Our special treatment began at the American Airlines desk at Pearson airport, where they placed an American Airlines logo sticker on Daniel’s shirt. Shortly after arriving at the gate, the captain came to greet Daniel personally. Once onboard, when we told the flight attendant why Daniel was on the flight, she made a big fuss over him and later asked me, with tears in her eyes, what was wrong with him. She also announced his name as a special guest aboard the plane, and passengers wished him a good trip as they got off the ship. Daniel positively glowed!
The vessel Pride of Hawai’i was absolutely fabulous! Everything was accessible to Daniel, including a spacious cabin and bathroom, and easy access to all the restaurants, theatre, and more.
We dined at Cagney’s Steakhouse one night. As luck would have it, there was lobster on the menu that night. Daniel had the chance to eat lobster in the Maritimes two years ago and declined, and he’s been regretting it ever since. As well, we were all invited to a tour of the bridge on our last day, where Daniel got to meet the captain and have several photos taken with him.
Our excursions were fabulous – a tour up Mount Kilauea in Volcanoes National Park in Hilo, Hawai’i, where we also visited the gift shop at a Macadamia Nut Factory; the 10,000 foot climb up Mount Haleakala on Maui; a tour that took in Iao Valley State Park, Maui Tropical Plantation, and Maui Ocean Centre. On Kauai, we visited Waimea Canyon, the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific” (incredibly beautiful!), went to Luau Kalamaka and went swimming at a lovely beach in Po’ipu. The tour guides were second-to-none, incredibly helpful, entertaining, and well-versed in the culture, wildlife and even plant life on the islands – what an education! After getting off the ship on the final day, the driver from Handicabs of the Pacific drove us along the Oahu coast to Sea Life Park, where we thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to see so much marine life, some of which we couldn’t see anywhere else in the world. Daniel got to visit the Touch Pool, where he touched a sea urchin, a sand dollar, and a sea cucumber!
Once again, thank you both, and to everyone else who worked on our behalf to help create such a wonderful treat for Daniel and for our family. We also appreciated your generosity in including Daniel’s grandmother in our trip. This was yet another way everything was incredibly special. Your kindness is sincerely appreciated.
Warm regards, Sherry
