Market Outlook - August 2026

Looking ahead, markets are entering the seasonally volatile autumn period with economic fundamentals remaining generally supportive but expectations also rising. The combination of higher bond yields, ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, trade-related tensions, and the approaching U.S. election cycle is unlikely to produce a straight path higher.  However, one of the most remarkable features of this market has been the consistency of corporate earnings growth. In many cases, earnings have
continued to outpace market returns, a dynamic that has been both persistent and unusual relative to most market cycles we have experienced in our careers.  While headlines continue to dominate the daily narrative, businesses have quietly continued to grow profits, generate cash flow, and adapt to an ever-changing economic landscape.

This resilience has reinforced our constructive outlook for equities. Our current expectations remain positive, but if earnings continue to advance at the pace seen over the past year, there is a growing case that even optimistic market targets could prove conservative. In the United States, an S&P 500 level of 8,000 is increasingly within the realm of reasonable outcomes rather than optimistic speculation. While volatility is unlikely to disappear, periods of uncertainty often create opportunities for disciplined investors focused on fundamentals rather than headlines. As we move into the autumn months, markets continue to demonstrate an impressive capacity to absorb geopolitical noise, policy uncertainty, and shifting economic narratives. For long-term investors, that resilience reinforces the value of staying invested, remaining selective, and focusing on quality businesses capable of compounding value through a variety of market environments.
