Market Outlook - March 2026
MSB Wealth - Apr 10, 2026
Our outlook on the markets from our March 2026 market commentary
If March felt like a rerun of the Oil Shock Channel, you are not alone. The Iran conflict sent crude prices on a roller coaster, briefly flirting with $120 a barrel before settling back below $100. Headlines warned of inflation, supply chain snarls, and the spectra of stagflation. Yet, history reminds us that oil shocks are nothing new. Markets have weathered them for decades, and the S&P 500 has a habit of shaking off even the most dramatic corrections. After geopolitical oil disruptions, US stocks have typically bounced back, delivering average gains of 12 percent in the year following such events.
Investor sentiment has recently plunged into extreme bearishness, which, paradoxically, is often a bullish signal. When pessimism peaks, markets tend to surprise on the upside. Historically, the S&P 500 has registered strong gains in the six- and twelve-month periods after sentiment hits these lows. Meanwhile, resilient earnings, low unemployment, and Canada’s status as a major oil exporter provide a sturdy foundation for portfolios. While the war’s duration remains uncertain, the political timeline may force an earlier resolution, limiting economic damage. For investors, the message is clear: volatility is uncomfortable, but it is also normal. Staying disciplined, diversified, and opportunistic has proven to be the best antidote to headline anxiety. In other words, do not let today’s oil drama convince you to abandon your long-term script. The market has seen this episode before, and history suggests the credits roll with positive returns.
At MSB Wealth, we are not just watching from the sidelines. Recent portfolio adjustments have leaned into real assets and resource sectors, with increased exposure to energy and materials, while maintaining broad diversification across financials, technology, and equity funds. This approach is designed to absorb volatility, capitalize on Canada’s strengths, and keep portfolios resilient in the face of uncertainty. Our focus remains on quality, discipline, and long-term opportunity so clients can stay invested with confidence, even when the headlines are anything but calm.
