August 2026 Market Commentary
MSB Wealth - Sep 01, 2026
In August, tariffs seemed to appear and disappear with the regularity of summer thunderstorms. Rising bond yields, Middle East tensions, and trade negotiations between Canada and the U.S. dominated the headlines.
If July's lesson was that markets can endure geopolitical noise, August demonstrated that they can occasionally ignore it altogether. Investors spent much of the month navigating rising bond yields, renewed tensions in the Middle East, persistent inflation concerns, and the latest chapter in the ongoing trade negotiations between Canada and the United States, which once again generated more headlines than clarity. For a period, it seemed as though tariffs were appearing and disappearing with the regularity of summer thunderstorms. Yet equities continued their advance. The S&P 500 gained 2.6% during August, while the S&P/TSX Composite advanced 3.0%, extending an already impressive year for both Canadian and U.S. markets. Beneath the headlines, corporate earnings remained resilient and economic activity continued to show enough strength to support growth without convincing investors that a recession was imminent.
Interestingly, August represented something of a sequel to July's market rotation. While energy and financials continued to perform well, leadership broadened as investors once again embraced selective growth opportunities. Software companies enjoyed one of their strongest months in years, while markets became increasingly focused on identifying companies capable of converting AI investment into measurable earnings growth. At the same time, rising Treasury yields reminded investors that capital still has a cost and that valuation discipline remains important. The result was a market increasingly rewarding quality, earnings visibility, and free cash flow rather than simply chasing the most popular narrative.
From a portfolio manager's perspective, the message remains encouraging. Markets are continuing to reward diversification, disciplined security selection, and a focus on business fundamentals rather than short-term headlines. While volatility is never far away, the underlying drivers of long-term returns remain intact. For patient investors, periods of uncertainty often create opportunities rather than obstacles, reinforcing the value of maintaining a well-balanced portfolio and staying focused on the long-term investment journey.
