TSX down 1,681 points, DOW down 4,142 since start of year.
In the past week, there has been a sell-off in the stock market. The last similar period of volatility was in Q4 2018. After this period, the market rebounded sharply in 2019 reaching new highs. Until last week, the market continued to go up in spite of knowledge of the Coronavirus. We hope this email will provide an historical factual perspective to help reassure you and give you confidence in sticking with your long-term investment strategy.
We have communicated with our internal strategists as well as with representatives of the investment firms we recommend. We are pleased to provide you the attached report prepared by the BMO Nesbitt Burns Portfolio Advisory Team that provides perspective on the Coronavirus outbreak and its impact on the markets. We would like to highlight that “BMO Economics continues to think that 2020 will see reasonably strong global growth of 2.6%, assuming the virus is contained by April.” Please refer to the charts contained in this report which show how markets have reacted to previous epidemics.
