Your Investment Strategy works in conjunction with your Financial Plan. This is where we take your road map and turn it into an actionable strategy.

Your portfolio will be managed to target your return requirement - not to beat the TSX or some alternative all equity index, and it is set up to achieve this return with the least possible risk.

This is done through asset allocation – having different assets classes (Equities, Fixed Income, Cash and Alternative Assets) in different weights, allowing for the different benefits of each asset class to provide positive returns in different situations.

Within the guidelines of the asset allocation, individual investments are then chosen. The same diligence, methodology and process that was used institutionally is applied. We do not buy stocks, we buy companies. We buy good companies that we would be happy to own privately. We will buy their equity, we will buy their debt, but first, we must buy into their business.

As a rule, we are value investors, and have a contrarian bent. Our methodology requires a bottom up analysis of the company and a deep understanding of their operations. We require a clean balance sheet, manageable debt load, cash flows that can fund operations and capital expenses and all at a reasonable price.
