Managed Programs

Architect Program
The BMO Nesbitt Burns Architect Program is the next evolution in managed assets program - a unified managed account. Now within a single, comprehensive program, you can achieve a level of diversification and sophistication previously only possible through multiple, separate investment vehicles and multiple investment accounts.

The Architect Program embodies the essence of what people have been looking for in a managed assets program - freedom from ongoing monitoring of the markets and day-to-day investment decisions and the comfort that your investments are being optimally managed by a team of experts led by your BMO Nesbitt Burns Investment Advisor.

With the Architect Program your BMO Nesbitt Burns Investment Advisor has flexibility when designing and constructing your recommended portfolio. The Investment Advisor will draw from a selection of separately managed accounts, mutual funds, exchange traded funds and alternative investments. This selection will include access to investment managers previously unavailable for such a low minimum investment ($150,000).

Designed to provide you with the opportunity to enhance your return potential while seeking to limit the volatility of returns, the Architect Program provides you with enormous benefits:
  • An individualized strategic asset mix

  • Skilled expertise in portfolio management that incorporated risk management principles by including the potential for diversification by investment vehicles, managers and styles;

  • Ongoing portfolio oversight, and;

  • Active coordination of the underlying investment vehicles for systematic portfolio rebalancing, and intelligent cash management.

Quadrant Program
The BMO Nesbitt Burns Quadrant Program brings a comprehensive approach to investment management — one that has proven to deliver dependable long-term results.

Global in scope, but singular in focus, this innovative program offers:
  • Systematic asset allocation,

  • Access to leading institutional investment managers and investment styles from around the world,

  • Daily monitoring, and

  • Regular rebalancing and reporting.
All at a predictable and very reasonable cost. Minimum investment for this account is $50,000. The minimum initial investment for RRIF, LIF and LRIF accounts is $100,000.

Quadrant begins with a thorough (but brief) investment questionnaire, the results of which form the basis for an Investment Policy Statement. Once you have approved this statement it is used to establish guidelines for your ideal asset mix. Selecting the right asset classes (stocks, bonds and treasury bills) is the most crucial element in your investment success, accounting for 90 per cent of total portfolio returns.

Your Investment Advisor next develops a portfolio for you that is designed to take advantage of the variety of available investment strategies. Under certain market conditions, some management styles work better than others. As a result, Quadrant diversifies so that a number of styles are working for you. This reduces the effects of short-term fluctuations and increases the likelihood of reaching your long-term goals.

With the Quadrant Program you can rest assured that the management styles chosen are right for the times. Our associates at SEI Investments (SEI) are world leaders in measuring the effectiveness of investment management styles and management companies. Calling on an unparalleled global database, SEI researchers in the U.S. and Canada select the elite group of specialist managers who will work on your behalf through Quadrant.

Finally, the more than 25 top investment-management firms chosen for the Quadrant Program are monitored daily by SEI analysts to ensure that they stay within defined investment parameters for investment style, process and performance.

Depending on your circumstances, your diversified Quadrant portfolio may be comprised of Canadian and international mutual funds. These funds could include small- and large-capitalization stocks representing developed and emerging economies, along with a variety of fixed-income investments and money market instruments.

Blueprint Program
The BMO Nesbitt Burns BluePrint Program offers you the opportunity to participate in one or more of seven model portfolios, each actively managed based on the recommendations of the top-ranked BMO Nesbitt Burns Research team. Plus, as a fee-based account, there are no trading commissions.

With BluePrint, a low monthly or quarterly fee (which varies by type of portfolio and the value of assets invested) covers:
  • The counsel of an Investment Advisor;

  • Portfolio management services;

  • Custody, administrative and trading costs; and

  • Comprehensive Valuation and Performance Measurement Reports issued every three months.
Your BMO Nesbitt Burns Investment Advisor will help you determine which model portfolio or combination of portfolios will best meet your objectives. You may select from:
  • The Canadian Equity Portfolio, holding 40 to 50 companies with great growth potential chosen from the S&P/TSX Index by our analysts.

  • The U.S. Equity Portfolio, investing in 45 to 50 companies picked as superior investments from the Standard and Poors 500 Index.

  • The Canadian Fixed Income Portfolio, actively trading in bonds to generate total return rather than just income, while maintaining safety of capital.

  • The Monthly Pay Portfolio, providing predictable income from an actively-managed bond portfolio — with a high degree of safety.

  • The U.S. Fixed Income Portfolio, investing in U.S. dollar denominated fixed-income securities, to provide currency diversification and superior potential growth and income.

  • The Trustee Account Portfolio, an actively-managed conservative bond portfolio governed by the provincial Trustee Acts and some Municipal Acts.

  • The Total Equity Portfolio, investing in 40-50 companies throughout Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia.

Advance Program
The BMO Nesbitt Burns Advance Program offers a highly-individualized approach to establishing and maintaining an appropriate investment strategy and portfolio. The Advance program achieves this by calling on the personal services of a BMO Nesbitt Burns Investment Advisor and on the expertise of leading investment managers from around the world. Until recently, the services of these managers have been beyond the reach of most individual investors.

The Advance Program forms a team composed of you, your Investment Advisor and an experienced professional investment manager. The shared objective is to achieve your unique investment goals by establishing an individually-designed segregated portfolio and maintaining it in the face of changing market conditions or personal circumstances.

Through its systematic, collective approach to pursuing superior results, Advance offers significant advantages over investing on your own. In return, you pay a single, all-inclusive quarterly fee — a portion of which may be tax-deductible for non-registered accounts.

How Advance Works
Before recommending solutions, your Investment Advisor will help assess your needs using the Advance Program questionnaire.

Your responses enable BMO Nesbitt Burns to develop a written personal Investment Policy Statement, which sets out your goals and any restrictions. The Investment Policy Statement determines the types of investments you will own and the management style that is right for you.

The World's Leading Investment Managers
BMO Nesbitt Burns continually surveys and evaluates investment managers around the globe. Those who satisfy a long list of criteria are interviewed in-depth. The resulting elite group is invited to join the Advance Program.

From this select roster of global investment leaders, the Advance Program portfolio-management specialists select the appropriate investment managers and styles appropriate for your requirements.

Comprehensive Reports
From day one, your BMO Nesbitt Burns Investment Advisor and a dedicated team of investment specialists monitor your portfolio on an ongoing basis to ensure your selected managers continue to meet your investment needs.

In addition to regular monthly statements, every three months you will receive a comprehensive and personalized quarterly review. The review assesses your current asset allocation and analyzes your portfolio's performance from many standpoints. It also provides comparisons to relevant benchmarks so you will know exactly how you're doing.

At year-end, you will receive a similarly-detailed annual reporting package. This provides a complete review of information required for income tax filing, including deposits and withdrawals, portfolio transactions, realized capital gains and income.
